2010 Day of Caring
On April 22nd, one of the largest volunteer events in Monroe County took place. More than 200 volunteers from 26 participating employers and organizations assisted local nonprofit agencies for the annual Day of Caring. A total of 19 different nonprofit agencies were helped, with 42 projects completed throughout Monroe County. After the long day, there were 1,306 volunteer hours logged with a cash value of $27,230. Some of the projects this year had an Earth Day focus.
Here are a few of the completed projects:
·Volunteers repaired pasture fences at Equi-librium in Snydersville
·They marked hiking trails at Camp Trexler in Jonas
·They spread mulch and painted at the YMCA in Stroudsburg
·They washed cars at Burnley Workshop
·They delivered meals to shut-ins throughout the county
·They repaired tents and painted a shower stall at the Boy Scouts' Camp Minsi on Route 940 in Pocono Summit
·They helped mail newsletters for Family Promise
After finishing their volunteer work, everyone involved in Day of Caring met for a picnic hosted by Barley Creek Brewing Company in Tannersville. All attendees enjoyed Barley Creek’s “All American Barbecue” complete with famous Penn State Berkey Creamery Ice Cream. Picnic co-sponsor desaki Restaurant provided sushi at the beginning of the event.
The United Way of Monroe County would like to thank all of the 2010 Day of Caring Sponsors including Barley Creek Brewing Company, desaki, ESU Warriors, Got Shirts.org, Harsco Industrial/Patterson-Kelly, Northampton Community College-Monroe Campus, Pocono Record, ppl, United Envelope, and Walmart DC #6080.
In-kind gifts were also appreciated from Access Office Technologies, Cramer’s Home Centers, C & S Bros. Signs and Printing, East Stroudsburg Hardware, Home and Garden Landscaping, Home Depot, Lowe’s, Steele’s True Value Hardware, and VIP Studios, Inc.
One final thanks goes out to all of the Day of Caring participants. Thank you for giving back to our community!
